Malawi wants to diversify its economy. Tobacco, the mainstay of the economy for slightly over a century, is falling as decades of public health education on the dangers of tobacco have led to a sustained drop in sales. Colonial era laws prohibiting the cultivation of cannabis have been relaxed to, at least, allow cultivation of industrial hemp and medicinal cannabis. The illegal herb, though, remains under cultivation. But it’s the newly legalized industry which is finding the going tough. Story by Golden Matonga.
